Within the activities of the Clinical Biochemistry Branch, a doctoral thesis defense was held at the College of Medicine, University of Babylon, by PhD candidate Falah Hassan Mohammed, titled “Study of the Role of Pentosidine, Paraoxonase-1, and Galectin-9 in Women with Breast Cancer,” under the supervision of Assistant Professors Dr. Ban Mahmoud Shakir Al-Jouda and Dr. Suhad Kazem Ali. During his defense, the candidate stated that the study aimed to determine the relationship between the Galectin-9 gene and protein levels and their association with breast cancer, as well as to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the enzyme Paraoxonase-1 and the oxidative factor Pentosidine in various stages of breast cancer. The results showed a statistically significant increase in the concentrations of Galectin-9 and Pentosidine, and a decrease in the antioxidant factor Paraoxonase-1. The study also demonstrated an inverse linear relationship between Pentosidine and Paraoxonase-1. The study concluded that elevated levels of Galectin-9 and Pentosidine, along with decreased levels of Paraoxonase-1, could be used to monitor breast cancer activity and assess the efficacy of drugs used in breast cancer treatment.
