University of Babylon Discusses a Diploma Thesis on Urinary Tract Stones The Department of Family and Community Medicine at the College of Medicine, University of Babylon, held the defense of a high diploma thesis by student Sura Abbas Fadel, titled “The Relationship between Body Mass Index and the Characteristics of Urinary Tract Stones among Patients in Babylon Governorate”, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Abdulrazzaq Al-Salman. The researcher explained that obesity is a major risk factor for the occurrence and recurrence of urinary tract stones. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and the formation of urinary tract stones among patients in Babylon Governorate. The results showed that most of the patients were male, with the majority in the 45–60 age group, residing in urban areas. More than half of the patients were obese, and most had a high-risk waist circumference. The study demonstrated a clear positive association between BMI and the prevalence of urinary tract stones, indicating that a higher BMI increases the likelihood of stone formation, recurrence, and the need for urological procedures to remove the stones. The study concluded that elevated BMI and obesity increase the risk of urinary tract stone formation and recurrence, emphasizing the need for preventive strategies, including weight control, dietary modification, and adequate fluid intake.
