College of Medicine at the University of Babylon Discusses Obese Individuals The Physiology Department at the College of Medicine, University of Babylon, discussed the master’s thesis of student Haneen Raed Abdulwahid, titled: “Evaluation of the Beneficial Effects of Melatonin on Weight Loss and Lipid Profile in Obese Individuals”, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Ikhlas Hatem Abdulameer and Professor Dr. Qais Ismail Ajjam. The discussion was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Muhannad Abbass Al-Shalah, along with several faculty members and postgraduate students. During her defense, the researcher explained that obesity is an increasing global health concern, being associated with numerous comorbidities including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and sleep disorders. Recent studies suggest that melatonin, a neurohormone involved in regulating the biological clock, may also play a role in weight management and metabolic control. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of melatonin supplementation on anthropometric measurements, lipid profile, and glycemic control in obese individuals following a calorie-restricted diet. The study concluded that combining melatonin supplementation with a calorie-restricted diet led to significant improvements in body composition, lipid profile, and blood glucose indicators in obese adults. These findings support the potential therapeutic role of melatonin in obesity management, although the slight reduction in HDL (“good”) cholesterol warrants further investigation.
