Master’s Thesis at the College of Medicine – University of Babylon on Colistin-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae The Department of Microbiology at the College of Medicine discussed the master’s thesis of graduate student Karar Haider Jasim, titled: “A Study of Colistin Resistance in Clinical Isolates of Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in Hospitals of Babylon Province, Iraq,” supervised by Prof. Dr. Alaa Hani Al-charrakh. The discussion was attended by the Head of the Department, Prof. Dr. Lamees Abdulrazzaq Abdul-Latif, along with a number of faculty members, academics, and postgraduate students. During his defense, the researcher explained that 150 clinical samples were collected from major hospitals in the city of Hilla, Babylon Province, including Marjan Teaching Hospital, Hilla Teaching Hospital, and Imam Al-Sadiq Hospital, with the aim of isolating Klebsiella pneumoniae. All samples underwent aerobic cultivation on various culture media. A total of 48 isolates were identified as Klebsiella pneumoniae from different infection sites: • 21 urine samples • 10 wound samples (including burns) • 14 sputum samples • 3 samples from otitis media The results also showed that 102 samples yielded positive growth of other microorganisms besides Klebsiella, including other Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. Klebsiella pneumoniae was diagnosed using a combination of colony morphology, microscopic examination, biochemical tests, and the automated Vitek 2 identification system. This study provides a comprehensive overview of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from the city of Hilla, Babylon Province, with a focus on antibiotic-resistance patterns, virulence factor production, and the detection of resistance-associated genes. The findings highlight the alarming prevalence of multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in clinical settings—particularly in hospital-acquired infections—and underscore the urgent need for effective surveillance and new therapeutic strategies to combat these resistant strains
