A Seminar on the Dangers of Smoking at the College of Medicine, University of Babylon
Under the patronage of the President of the University of Babylon, Professor Dr. Ameen Ajeel Al-Yasiri, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Medicine, Professor Dr. Muhannad Abbas Al-Shallah, a health awareness seminar was held as part of the activities of psychological counseling, educational guidance, and the Women’s Affairs Unit. The seminar focused on “The Dangers of Smoking on Individuals and Society and Ways to Quit.”
Assistant Professor Dr. Asmaa Mohammed Maki delivered a lecture in which she explained that smoking has negative effects on human health, causing cardiovascular diseases such as strokes and high blood pressure. It also increases the risk of cancers of the lungs, larynx, mouth, and stomach, while weakening the immune system, making the body more susceptible to diseases.
She further added that smoking leads to addiction due to its nicotine content, making it difficult to quit and causing stress and anxiety when not smoking. Additionally, it negatively impacts social relationships due to the odor of smoke and its effects on others.
Assistant Professor Dr. Reem Abdul Raheem Mardan discussed ways to quit smoking, emphasizing that a person must have a genuine desire to quit and be aware of the serious health and societal risks associated with smoking.
She highlighted several alternative methods, such as using nicotine replacement therapy (e.g., gum or patches), seeking support from family and friends to create a supportive environment, joining support groups, or consulting specialists for smoking cessation. Additionally, she advised staying away from places associated with smoking, replacing negative habits with positive activities such as reading or practicing hobbies
