Advisory Council Meeting Held at Babylon College of Medicine
Under the chairmanship of Professor Dr. Muhannad Abbas Al-Shallal, Dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Babylon, the first meeting of the Advisory Council was held, with the membership of the scientific and administrative assistants, heads of the scientific departments of the College of Medicine, directors of public and private hospitals, Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Ajrash, Director of the Department of Planning and Human Development representing the Babylon Health Directorate, a representative of the Medical Syndicate, and a representative from civil society organizations.
The meeting began with the establishment of the internal regulations of the council and the appointment of the council’s chair and deputy. The agenda topics were then discussed, most notably the importance of applied research and activating its practical benefit, given its relevance to the outcomes of medical colleges and the needs of the community, as well as the mechanism of collaboration with the Babylon Health Directorate in its implementation.
The council also emphasized the rights and duties of newly graduated physicians, highlighting the importance of conducting workshops for sixth-year students to raise awareness of this topic—especially in the early days of their employment.
Further discussion addressed the key challenges faced by teaching hospitals in training medical students, including the necessity of developing a framework through which colleges can support student training halls and wards, particularly in light of the increasing number of students. Support for health ministry doctors who are actively involved in student training was also considered essential.
Lastly, the council reviewed the current curriculum and discussed key topics that should be emphasized or added, including medical ethics—specifically the doctor’s approach to patient interaction—as well as the role of civil society organizations and public opinion regarding physicians’ professional conduct.
At the end of the meeting, several recommendations were submitted to the relevant authorities, and the date for the next meeting was set for June.
