The College of Medicine at the University of Babylon Organizes an Awareness Campaign at Al-Hilla Secondary School for Distinguished Girls on Rabies and the Risks of Addiction
Under the direction of the Dean of the College of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Mohend Abbass Al-Shalah, and within the framework of extracurricular activities adopted by the College of Medicine at the University of Babylon to serve the community, the Department of Family and Community Medicine, in cooperation with the Educational Counseling Unit, organized an awareness field visit to Al-Hilla Secondary School for Distinguished Girls on Monday, 23 February 2026.
The visit was supervised by a specialized team that included:
• Prof. Dr. Amir Kadhim Hussein, Rapporteur of the Department of Family and Community Medicine.
• Assist. Prof. Dr. Asmaa Mohammed Makki, Head of the Educational Counseling Unit.
• Lecturer Dr. Hussein Matar Numan, Coordinator of the Human Rights course.
The campaign also witnessed active participation from fourth-year medical students (clinical course of Community Medicine), who were distributed among the different school classes to deliver direct health education messages to the students.
Awareness Campaign Topics
1. Awareness about Rabies
The lectures delivered by the students focused on the scientific and preventive aspects of rabies and included:
• An introduction to the causative virus and its modes of transmission.
• A review of the epidemiology of the disease locally and globally.
• A detailed explanation of the clinical manifestations of rabies and its dangers, emphasizing that it is a fatal disease.
The team emphasized the importance of immediately washing the wound with running water and soap for no less than 15 minutes following an animal bite, and the necessity of visiting emergency units promptly to receive rabies immunoglobulin and vaccination, while strictly adhering to the full vaccination schedule.
In addition, the Educational Counseling Unit delivered an awareness lecture on the dangers of drug abuse, highlighting the negative consequences of addiction on individuals and society. The lecture stressed the importance of enhancing health and educational awareness to combat this threat and protect educational institutions.
The campaign witnessed strong engagement from the school’s students and teaching staff through discussions and questions. At the conclusion of the visit, the Department of Family and Community Medicine expressed its sincere appreciation to the administration of Al-Hilla Secondary School for Distinguished Girls for their fruitful cooperation and for facilitating the team’s mission, which contributed to achieving the intended objectives of the campaign.
