Under the patronage of the Deanship of the College of Medicine at the University of Babylon, and in coordination with the Iraqi Board for Medical Specializations, the thesis of the candidate Buraq Asim Mohammed was discussed at the lecture hall of the College of Medicine at Al-Hilla Teaching Hospital. The research was submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Iraqi Board Certificate in General Surgery, and was entitled:
“Procedures and Precautions to Reduce Complications of Thyroid Surgery.”
The discussion committee was chaired by the Dean of the College of Medicine, and included a distinguished panel of professors and consultants:
• Prof. Dr. Mohend Abbass Al-Shalah – Dean of the College of Medicine, University of Babylon (Chair).
• Consultant Dr. Adnan Mohammed Kamil – Al-Hilla Teaching Hospital (Member).
• Consultant Dr. Walaa Nouri Majid Beezem – Retired (Member).
• Prof. Dr. Salah Hadi Kadhim – College of Medicine, University of Babylon (Member and Supervisor).
The research addressed a comparative study on thyroid surgery, one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures, focusing on strategies to reduce associated complications such as postoperative bleeding, injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, and impairment of the parathyroid glands.
The study compared three surgical techniques aimed at minimizing complications:
• Traditional suture ligation
• Bipolar cautery
• Ligasure technology
The research emphasized the importance of comprehensive preoperative assessment, adequate medical control of thyroid activity using medications such as methimazole, and meticulous surgical technique to accurately identify the recurrent laryngeal nerve and preserve the blood supply to the parathyroid glands.
The study also highlighted the need for postoperative monitoring of serum calcium levels, proper wound care, and voice assessment to ensure patient safety and optimal recovery.
The findings concluded that the implementation of modern preventive measures and precise surgical techniques plays a significant role in reducing complication rates and improving clinical outcomes for patients undergoing thyroid surgery.
The discussion was held at 9:00 AM on Thursday, 12 March 2026, in the lecture hall of the College of Medicine at Al-Hilla Teaching Hospital, in the presence of a number of professors, resident doctors, postgraduate students, and representatives of the Iraqi Board for Medical Specializations.
