A Seminar at the College of Medicine, University of Babylon on Drug Abuse
Under the patronage of the President of the University of Babylon, Prof. Dr. Ameen Ajeel Al-Yasiri, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Muhannad Abbass Al-Shalah, the Educational Guidance Unit, in cooperation with the Women’s Affairs Unit, held an awareness seminar titled “Awareness Without Drugs to Protect Our Minds and the Future of Our Children.” The seminar was moderated by Dr. Sabrin Saleem, liaison member of the Women’s Affairs Unit at the college.
Assistant Professor Dr. Asmaa Mohammed Maki delivered a lecture in which she explained that the phenomenon of drug proliferation is one of the most dangerous problems facing the nation. This social problem is among the most serious, as it targets what is most precious to us—our youth and our future. It primarily affects young people and adolescents. Studies have shown an increase in drug use among the youth and minors in society, and that a significant percentage of school and university students consume alcoholic substances and drugs.
She also shared stories that have circulated among families, recounting the tragic effects of these poisons, noting that some drug addicts reach horrifying conditions and may commit acts that are hard to believe.
At the end of the lecture, emphasis was placed on the fact that confronting this dangerous phenomenon is a responsibility shared by all. Every necessary effort must be made to combat this scourge and prevent its further spread among members of society, especially youth. Society must recognize the magnitude of this threat and firmly confront those criminals who endanger the safety of its citizens through drug trafficking. Projects and plans must be put in place to address this phenomenon, as the immense profits generated from the drug trade fuel corruption, strengthen criminal networks, create an atmosphere of fear and instability in the country, and hinder development.
