A Seminar on First Aid Held at the College of Medicine, University of Babylon
Under the patronage of the President of the University of Babylon, Prof. Dr. Ameen Ajeel Al-Yaseri, and the supervision of the Dean of the College of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Muhannad Abbass Al-Shalah, the Women’s Affairs Unit organized an awareness seminar titled “The Importance of First Aid Training in Educational and Community Institutions.” This event was conducted in alignment with the Third National Plan and the “Security and Peace” pillar of protection and prevention, specifically paragraph three (Education on First Aid).
Dr. Sabrin Saleem Abdul-Kareem, Head of the Women’s Affairs Unit, delivered a lecture explaining the concept of first aid. She clarified that first aid is the immediate and temporary care provided to an injured or suddenly ill person with the primary goal of saving their life (the top priority), preventing the deterioration of their condition or the worsening of the injury, and relieving pain until specialized medical assistance arrives.
During the lecture, she highlighted that:
* 25% of children’s injuries occur inside or near schools.
* 70% of cardiac arrest incidents occur outside hospitals, and survival depends on rapid intervention.
* Every one-minute delay in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) reduces the chances of survival by 10%.
The seminar concluded with several recommendations, including expanding training programs to enhance community safety; enacting legislation that mandates the presence of trained and certified first aid responders in every institution; ensuring the availability of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in clearly accessible public locations; establishing strategic partnerships with Red Crescent and Civil Defense organizations; and launching continuous awareness campaigns to educate the public about the importance of the first moments in emergencies.
