Awareness Lecture for First-Year Students at the College of Medicine, University of Babylon
The College of Medicine at the University of Babylon held a welcoming awareness lecture for the newly admitted first-year students, aimed at introducing them to the nature of medical school. The event included participation from several fourth-year students and recent graduates.
The lecture was attended by the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Muhannad Abbass Al-Shalah; the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ashraf Mohammed Ali Hussein; Prof. Dr. Kazem Jawad Al-Hamadani; and the Director of Registration, Lecturer Soren Amin Fattah.
The Assistant Dean explained the key regulations issued by the Ministry of Higher Education and the University, which medical students must adhere to, along with the penalties for violations. He also outlined several instructions that students are expected to follow throughout their years of study.
Afterward, fourth-year students Ahmed Diaa Ali and Mohammed Hassanein Kamil, along with graduates Dr. Jaafar Mohammed and Dr. Ahmed Mazen, delivered an awareness lecture specifically about the University of Babylon’s College of Medicine, aiming to guide the newly admitted students.
They discussed the history and foundation of the college, its academic system, and the institutional accreditation granted to the College of Medicine in 2023 by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). They also emphasized the importance of student feedback, formative assessments within academic departments, and the College’s mission and vision—graduating physicians equipped with solid knowledge, professional ethics, and high scientific competence, which represent the three pillars upon which distinguished students are built.
The presenters then addressed the transition from high school to medical school, highlighting the differences in learning style, the shift in language, the expanded volume of academic material, and strategies for effective study. This was delivered through an open discussion with the students, during which common questions were answered by the college graduates
