Scientific Seminar on Foot-and-Mouth Disease Held at the College of Medicine, University of Babylon
Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Ameen Ajeel Al-Yasiri, President of the University of Babylon, and under the supervision of Professor Dr. Muhannad Abbas Al-Shallah, Dean of the College of Medicine, and within the framework of continuing medical education and the Sustainable Development Goals, the Department of Microbiology organized an awareness seminar titled “Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Its Spread in Iraq.”
The seminar was attended by Professor Dr. Jawad Kazem Tarad, Head of the Department; Dr. Ilham Abbas Banyan, Director of Continuing Education; and Dr. Lamees Abdul Razaq, Director of Graduate Studies, in addition to a number of faculty members and staff.
The seminar was delivered by Professor Dr. Zaitoon Abdul Raza Al-Khafaji and Assistant Lecturer Mohammed Mohsen Mohammed, and focused on the virus responsible for foot-and-mouth disease—a highly contagious virus that primarily affects cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, sheep, and goats. It spreads rapidly through airborne transmission or direct contact, making it a major challenge to control.
The session addressed the causes behind the spread of the disease in Iraq, highlighting environmental factors and agricultural practices that may contribute to outbreaks. Preventive strategies were also discussed, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness among livestock breeders and implementing measures such as vaccination and monitoring the movement of infected animals.
The speakers also discussed the disease’s impact on Iraq’s livestock sector, noting that it causes significant economic losses due to reduced animal productivity and temporary bans on export. The possibility of transmission to humans—although rare—was also addressed as an area of ongoing research.
This seminar represents an important step toward enhancing scientific understanding of foot-and-mouth disease and strategies to control it, thereby contributing to the protection of livestock and reducing the disease’s negative effects on Iraq’s agricultural sector
