Under the patronage of the President of the University of Babylon, Prof. Dr. Ameen Ajeel Al-Yasiri, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Mohand Abbass Al-Shalah, the Women’s Affairs Unit, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit and Educational Guidance, organized an awareness seminar entitled “A Generation Without Drugs: A Vision for a Safe Future.”
The seminar was moderated by Dr. Sabrin Saleem, liaison officer of the Women’s Affairs Unit at the college, and was held within the framework of the Third National Plan for Women – Pillar of Protection and Prevention / Paragraph Five, which addresses negative phenomena that may affect women.
The event was attended by the Director of the Continuing Education Unit, Prof. Dr. Ilham Abbas Banyan, along with several faculty members, staff, and students.
Assistant Lecturer Maryam Amer Hafthi delivered a guidance lecture aimed at raising awareness among attendees about the dangers of drugs and their negative effects on individuals and society as a whole. During the lecture, she explained what is meant by drug abuse: the use of any narcotic substance in any of its forms – such as powders inhaled through the nose, solid narcotic pills taken orally, or liquids such as alcohol consumed by drinking.
She defined addiction as a deadly threat and a destructive disaster — “grains of white powder inhaled or injected into the vein of a young man or woman, or blue smoke rising from the breath of an individual imagining they are flying in a world of pleasure and illusory euphoria, while in reality, they are descending into the abyss, destroying their aspirations and the hopes of their family and society.”
At the conclusion of the seminar, recommendations were made to encourage ongoing communication with the faculty staff and with governmental and health institutions that ensure confidentiality and protect the privacy of individuals seeking help.
